Acupuncture for pets?

A centuries-old therapy, modern acupuncture includes massage, electrical stimulation, and low-power lacer stimulation in addition to traditional needle therapy.   Acupuncture provides many of the same benefits to our pets as it does to humans.

At the Veterinary Medical Center, we are dedicated to wellness and healing in small animals. Acupuncture is available as a therapeutic option and is administered by a Veterinarian and Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist.  The Care Center at VMC has three Certified Veterinary Acupuncturists on staff:

What are the benefits of acupuncture?

Acupuncture speeds the healing process by stimulating nerves, relieving muscle spasm, increasing blood circulation and causing the release of endorphins (a hormone involved in controlling pain) and cortisol (a natural anti-inflammatory).

This treatment is best known for its pain relieving properties yet acupuncture can be used to treat numerous other conditions. Stimulation of an acupuncture point increases blood circulation,  promotes self-healing and allows natural pain relief through endorphin release and neurologic stimulation along with relieving muscle spasms. Treatments can be tailored to the individual based on the patient’s past and present issues.   Electroacupuncture may also be utilized, which is a low electrical stimulus to some of the needles. Most animals tolerate this well and even find it relaxing.

What kind of patients benefit from Acupuncture?
Acupuncture, herbal & other holistic treatment modalities can be used to treat many types of medical conditions.

  • Emergency & acute illness such as vomiting, diarrhea, urinary obstruction, and CPR.
  • Post-operative rehabilitation: Acupuncture is ideal for patients who have undergone spinal, hip, stifle, and other orthopedic or neurosurgical procedures, or for patients recovering from a major illness or undergoing cancer treatment.
  • Chronic medical conditions that respond poorly to available "Western" treatments or patients suffering unwanted side effects from diseases, drugs or other forms of therapy (ie. radiation).
  • Acupuncture is especially effective for treating severe arthritis and chronic pain syndromes.
